Whether or not it is your first time away from home, nothing can quite prepare you for that first leap out of your comfort zone. However, it is our job to try! Which is why, we will give you what we feel, is all the information you could need before heading down under. This includes the external costs to moving to, and living in Australia. Costs such as flights, insurance, suggested savings and everything else in-between can all be found in the short video below. We truly want to leave no stone unturned and don't want you to experience any unwanted surprises.

The costs

Flights

The cost of flights will vary, depending on the airport and time of year. Although, generally they will range from anywhere between £300-700 one way. Of course, this isn't a trivial amount, which is why we suggest to look way ahead of time on comparison sites such as skyscanner, in order to get the best deal. A willingness to have changeovers on the way, is a good method to save money.

Insurance

Australia does not have free medical care, meaning insurance is vital. Some providers will not cover you playing a contact sport, so it is important to check thoroughly, to understand what you are signing up for. Insurance costs can vary between £50-100 per month.

Cost of living

Generally, the costs of living is around 15% higher in Australia compared to the UK. However, the minimum hourly wage is also significantly higher. If you are hired on a casual contract, your employer must pay you $30.15 AUD per hour, which is around £15 an hour.

Some of our partners are able to provide accommodation as well as work. The cost of this varies as well. Some employers are able to provide very cheap accommodation under $100 per month-free. However, in higher populated areas you may be paying upwards of $300 per week.

It is important to take this into consideration, when deciding where to start your journey.

Savings

Even if you may plan your journey to start with work immediately. It is very important you don't leave yourself short of funds. We recommend going over to Australia with a minimum of £2000, in order to protect yourself from unforeseen issues, at all times and ensure you can have the least stressful experience possible.

What to Expect

Moving abroad isn’t just a change of scenery — it’s the start of a whole new chapter. Through Ruck n Roam, you’ll join a rugby club that becomes your base, your family, and your launchpad for life in Australia.

When you land, expect to be met with open arms and open space. We’ll guide you through the first steps — finding work, settling into accommodation, and meeting your teammates. Within days, you’ll be training under the sun, swapping stories at the clubhouse, and exploring the local beaches or bush trails after training.

The first few weeks are all about finding your rhythm — learning how things work, adjusting to the lifestyle, and making those early connections that make a new place feel like home. We’ll check in, offer support, and make sure you’re set up to enjoy every part of the experience.

From there, it’s all about balance — rugby, travel, work, and adventure. Whether it’s weekend tournaments, road trips along the coast, or just a cold drink after a long session, you’ll discover how quickly Australia starts to feel like your place.

The Australian rugby season runs from April-October. So it doesn't have to be your entire adventure! Your pre and post season will be left free to explore Australia in any way you wish. Utilising the summer months to tick off all those must-see items off the bucket list.
